Aspirin and ibuprofen reduce fever by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis, but in some circumstances, using aspirin to control fever can have deadly consequences (see Deeper Insight 21. In this case, considerably more O2 is withdrawn from the accumulated blood than normally, so that cyanosis develops in the head and neck region. Hence, elevated serum Tg reflects increased secretory activity by thyroid gland stimulation or thyroid tissue damage, whereas Tg values below or at detectability level indicate a paucity of thyroid tissue or suppressed activity [63]. Unlike men, women do not have a refractory period and may quickly experience additional orgasms. Given the fairly short time that suffocation in a plastic bag can result in death, it is not surprising that fatal levels of drugs are uncommon in suicidal settings. Around 20% of the cases have at least one affected first-degree relative, which supports the involvement of genetic factors in the pathogenesis.
